I compared the file sizes of several documents in OOXML (Office 2007), ODF (OO.o), and the Office binary formats. Here's how they stand.
Name: Wikiwork (Spreadsheet)
ODF: 16.1 KB
OOXML: 28.5 KB
Binary: 55.0 KB
Winner: ODF
Name: KKlam (Spreadsheet)
ODF: 62.7 KB
OOXML: 147 KB
Binary: 226 KB
Winner: ODF
Name: Advertising (Presentation)
ODF: 12.0 KB
OOXML: 40.3 KB
Binary: 112 KB
Winner: ODF
Name: The Computer ... (Document)
ODF: 14.3 KB
OOXML: 11.4 KB
Binary: 27.0 KB
Winner: OOXML
Verdict: ODF produces smaller file sizes. However, one ODF file is 70KB larger than OOXML due to images. Microsoft probably won't make the sizes smaller.
Champion: ODF
